"Global" indices

This category includes all the Comit indices based on all the shares listed on the Italian electronic stock market (MTA).

Within it, we can distinguish three sub-categories: Global ("Globale") indices, Nuovo Mercato indices and "Plus" indices.

The Global indices are calculated in real time on the official or reference prices of all the shares listed on the MTA, excluding the Nuovo Mercato. The indices included here are:

Comit Globale

Comit Globale R

Comit Performance

Comit Performance R

Comit Globale (base 31/12/1972 = 100) includes all the shares listed on the MTA except for the Nuovo Mercato (NM), and is calculated daily during continuous trading on the basis of the weighted average prices for trading up to that moment (which become "official prices" at market close).

The Comit Globale index is broken down into seven main sector indices:

Banking

Finance

Insurance

Telecoms and services

Real estate

Industrial

Transport and leisure

In turn, the industrial sector index is broken down into 10 further subsectors: food and retail; paper and publishing; chemicals and petrochemicals; electrical and electronics; pharmaceutical and biomedical; cement, construction and equipment; metal; steel; textiles, clothing and accessories; auto and tyres.

Comit Globale R (base 31/12/1972 = 100) includes all the shares listed on the MTA except for the Nuovo Mercato (NM), and is calculated using reference prices (the weighted average prices of the last 10% of trading) calculated at the close of the trading session.

It is divided into exactly the same sector indices as the Comit Globale (although not into subsectors):

Banking

Finance

Insurance

Telecoms and services

Real estate

Industrial

Transport and leisure

Comit Performance, Comit Performance R

To give a true measure of the profitability of the Italian stock market over time, these four additional indices are calculated.

In general the Comit Globale and Comit Globale R only measure capital gains, and their value therefore falls on payment of ordinary dividends since the reserves incorporated in the shares have been paid out.
The Comit Performance and Comit Performance R indices provide a measure of total yield (dividends plus capital gains), as they include the ordinary dividends distributed.

The latter two indices are therefore particularly useful in measuring stock market gains and losses on medium- to long-term investments such as investment funds, pension funds, insurance companies, etc...

Comit Performance (base 31/12/1972 = 100) includes all the shares listed on the MTA except for the NM, and is calculated daily during continuous trading on the basis of the average weighted prices for trading up to that moment (which become "official prices" at market close).

Comit Performance R (base 31/12/1972 = 100) includes all the shares listed on the MTA except for the NM, and is calculated using reference prices (the weighted average prices of the last 10% of trading) calculated at the close of the trading session.

For both indices the sector breakdown is identical to that used for the Comit Globale R.

Nuovo Mercato indices are calculated in real time on the official or reference prices of all the shares listed on the Nuovo Mercato of the Italian stock exchange. The indices included here are:

Comit Nuovo Mercato (base 02/10/2001 = 100

Comit Nuovo Mercato R (base 02/10/2001 = 100)

The Comit Nuovo Mercato index includes all shares listed on the Nuovo Mercato of the Italian Stock Exchange, and is calculated on the basis of the weighted average prices for trading up to that moment (which become "official prices" at market close).

The Comit Nuovo Mercato R index includes the same shares used for the calculation of the Comit Nuovo Mercato, and is calculated daily at market close on the basis of reference prices.

Plus indices are calculated in real time on the official or reference prices of all the shares listed on the MTA, including the Nuovo Mercato. The indices included here are:

Comit Globale +

Comit Globale + R

Comit Performance +

Comit Performance + R

These indices are made up in much the same way as the Comit Globale, Comit Globale R, Comit Performance and Comit Performance R. The only difference worthy of note is that the Comit Globale + is broken down only into the main sectors, and not the subsectors.
